The Natural Stress Response

We are plagued with stress, insecurity and fears... it is the human condition.

Well, I should say, it is the human condition in 2023.

If you ever study the Natural Stress Response or The Stress Reaction Cycle, you would see that we are SUPPOSED TO have fear and stress. They keep us safe.

It USED TO BE, that we would have a perceived threat, like a dark alley at night, or a saber tooth tiger, and we would stress.

Our adrenal glands (on top of our kidneys) spit out adrenaline and cortisol (the stress hormone). Our blood pressure and heart rate rise. Our minds focus only on the threat… true tunnel vision.

We would run for safety. We might even stub our toe or hurt our knee on a rock, but we can still run because the chemicals in our bodies keep the pain from stopping us.

THEN, once we are safe from the perceived threat, we are SUPPOSED TO return to a calm state. The adrenals stop spitting out cortisol and adrenaline, and our blood pressure and heart rate return to normal.

But, in 2023, WE NEVER return to normal anymore!

We are in a constant state of panic, worry, stress and fear.

Some of the things we worry about:

- Health

- Money

- Politics

- Broken relationships

- Our Facebook profile pic

- If we are 5 lbs overweight

- What people think about us

So our bodies are constantly spitting out cortisol, causing a myriad of actual deadly physical health problems.

The solution… we need to live a life of mindfulness and awareness.

This includes simple things like:

- Reading

- Exercise

- Meditating

- Journaling

- Eating well

- Stay hydrated

- Turn off the news

- Having a coach or mentor

- Engage with other mindful people

When we live this way, our bodies are in a calm state. Life isn’t supposed to be so difficult and stressful… really.

We have made a mess of it all with conveniences and marketing.

The trick is to practice emotional regulation, which is our ability to identify harmful emotions, feel them, learn the lesson, and move on without incident.

This is part of emotional intelligence, which, if mastered, will help you become more successful in every area of your life… Finance, Romance and Health.
